Muting a chat
Silence a chat — one person's, a group's or an enterprise's — for 8 hours, a week, or for good.
Muting a chat
In any chat with a person, a group or an enterprise:
- Tap ⋮ at the top right, then Mute notifications.
- Choose For 8 hours, For a week or Always.
To undo it, tap ⋮, then Unmute.
What muting does
- It stops that chat's alerts. In a group's chat, someone who @mentions you still reaches you. See "Mentions".
- An enterprise's chat sends no alerts, so there are none to stop. Muting it keeps it out of the numbers below.
- The chat still shows new messages.
- In Talk, under Groups, a muted chat shows a bell with a line through it. Its unread number is grey, and it is not added to the number on Groups.
- The top bar stays quiet about it too.
- The mute stays when you leave the chat. When you open a group's or an enterprise's chat again, the top says muted.
Other chats
Event chats cannot be muted yet. You can:
- turn off whole kinds of alerts in Settings, under Notification Preferences. See "Notifications";
- block someone who is bothering you. See "Blocking someone".
