Getting Started with BeanPool
BeanPool is an invite-only community network where everyone starts at zero. Here is a step-by-step guide to accepting an invitation, securing your decentralized identity, and unlocking your starting credit line to trade.
Key Concept: BeanPool is entirely peer-to-peer. There are no central companies, passwords, or recovery emails. You control your own data and build reputation by trading with your neighbors.
1.Get an Invite Code
Because BeanPool is built on mutual trust, you cannot sign up without an invitation. You must receive a single-use invite code from an active member of your local community.
- Invite codes are usually shared as a text string (e.g.
bean-xxxx-xxxx) or via a QR code you can scan.
- If you do not know anyone in the network, visit local community markets, workshops, or ask organizers where the local node is active.
2.Access the App
Each local community runs its own independent server (node). You can access the app in two ways:
- Web App (PWA): Open your community's unique web address (e.g.,
mullum1.beanpool.org) in your browser. On iOS (Safari) or Android (Chrome), open the browser menu and tap "Add to Home Screen" to install it as an app.
- Native App: Download the official iOS or Android app directly from the App Store or Google Play (links are available on the welcome page of your local community's node).
3.Create Your Secure Identity
Launch the app on your device, select "I have an invite code", and paste your code. Then, complete the setup steps:
- Choose a Callsign: This is your public display name (e.g.,
@BakerBob) that other members will see on the ledger and marketplace.
- Secure Your 12-Word Recovery Phrase: The app will generate a 12-word seed phrase. This is the cryptographic key to your account.
⚠️ CRITICAL: There is no "forgot password" button. If you lose your 12-word recovery phrase or delete the app, your account and balance are lost forever. Write these 12 words down on paper and store them in a secure place. Never share them with anyone, and never take a screenshot.
4.Post Your First Offer (Unlocks Your Credit)
To keep the economy balanced, BeanPool uses the **Offer Covenant** (see Rules §4). New accounts start with a credit line of zero, meaning they can only spend beans they already hold.
- To open your credit line, go to the marketplace and post at least one Offer (e.g., offering general labor, fresh produce, baking, tutoring, or tools for rent).
- Listing your first active offer automatically unlocks a credit floor of −200 Beans (≈ 5 hours of community time).
- This credit line allows you to immediately accept offers or post Needs to hire others, even though you start with 0 Beans!
5.Make Your First Trade
Now that your credit line is open, you can begin participating in your local economy:
- Browse and Connect: Check out the Marketplace or view the interactive **Community Map** to find offers in your neighborhood. Tap "Message" on any post to open an encrypted chat with the author.
- The Escrow Safe-Guard: When you buy a service or good, the Beans are held safely in **escrow** *(held in trust by the system)*. The seller only receives the Beans after you confirm the job is completed, keeping both parties secure.
- Build Reputation: Once your trade completes, both you and your partner can rate each other (1 to 5 beans) and leave reviews. Completing trades grows your trust score and automatically expands your credit line.
What's Next? As you complete trades with multiple unique partners, your credit line will dynamically deepen (down to −2000 Beans), and you'll advance from a Newcomer to a Resident, unlocking direct gifting and invitation privileges!
