The Commons
Your community's shared beans: where they come from, and how they are spent.
What it is
The Commons is your community's shared pool of beans. It belongs to everyone.
Beans come into it from:
- the 1.5% market fee on every completed trade;
- the circulation fee on large balances. See "The circulation fee".
- members who pay in themselves, with Pay the Commons on the Ledger. A member paying back a debt to the Commons enters the pay-back code an admin shared, and the payment comes off the debt at once.
Seeing it
Tap Commons. At the top, Commons Pool shows how many beans it holds. On the phone, tap the โ beside the Commons title. In the web app, open the Ledger, tap Wallet, then Commons Pool โ. Either opens a panel with How It Works, Circulation Fees and Voting.
Enterprises, including those that run for the Commons, are listed in Commons, under Groups. Tap one to see its balance and every bean in and out. Every member sees the amounts; who paid or was paid, and the note, only its keepers and that member see.
Spending it
The Commons' beans are spent by a community Decision: a grant to an enterprise, a hardship grant to a member, or writing off a debt. See "Proposing a Decision". Decisions about the Commons' beans are counted with voice credits, from completed trades.
The Commons also covers a member's debt when they leave or are removed. See "Leaving or deleting your account".
A few small fixes need no Decision. Two examples are refunding a fee when a purchase across communities is undone, and an owner clearing the account of a broken deal.
